Introduce yourself to the world of whitewater paddlesports with this fun course. The minimum age to participate is 8 years old, and anyone between the ages of 8 and 15 must be with an adult chaperone. A full day introduction to whitewater kayaking, this course focuses on the joys of paddling more than the hard skills. The day begins with a morning session on the lake where students learn basic strokes, boat control and safety maneuvers. After a lakeside lunch, students head to a skill-appropriate river to see how they like paddling. Intended for those curious about whitewater paddling this program emphasizes scenery, companionship and fun.

This workshop introduces the understanding of:
• Boat design
• Whitewater gear and proper fit
• River terminology
• Boat safety

Skills you will acquire include:
• Forward and reverse paddling
• Moving your kayak sideways
• Balancing and intentionally leaning (or edging) your kayak
• Safely exiting a capsized kayak

In this course you will learn to paddle the Bellyak, the newest addition to paddlesports! Also known as prone paddling, the Bellyak provides you all of the thrill of whitewater kayaking with a much shorter learning curve and from an entirely new perspective. Perfect for first timers or for seasoned pros…you are guaranteed to be challenged and have FUN. In this course we will hit the river and have you running class II successfully in no time.

You’ll Learn:

  • How to understand the language of the river: how to read the current and understand water features
  • How to identify a safe line through a rapid
  • The basics of river etiquette
  • How to paddle your Bellyak: We’ll learn on flat water then apply to moving water, including forward strokes, trim, combination strokes and more
  • How to re-mount after capsizing, how to transition between positions for efficiency
  • How to surf…experience the thrill of surfing a river wave while you are inches above the water!

Pre-Requisites:

The bellyak is more physically demanding than a ducky and you WILL GET WET! Wetsuits provided.*
