The “bridge course” for paddlers advancing from beginner proficiency to intermediate skill levels. These paddlers are comfortable on introductory whitewater, have experience using paddling gear and equipment, understand paddling terms and concepts and have experience with flatwater rolling. The course aims to advance these paddlers into Class III boaters, able to carve up Nantahala Falls and enjoy more advanced rivers like the Pigeon and Ocoee.

In the weekday course paddlers will focus attention at Nantahala Falls and will likely paddle the Tuckasegee Gorge, the French Broad and the Pigeon. Perfecting a strong combat role will be a primary goal of the course, as this is an indispensable skill for Class III whitewater paddling. Skills will include:

  • Scouting
  • Eddy Turns/Peel Outs
  • Ferries
  • Stroke Timing
  • Combat Roll

This course is meant to be an “intensive class” with a focus on demonstrable skill improvements. Paddlers will start on the lake but will quickly progress into fast rapids. The five-day weekday course will produce better results than the two-day weekend course as paddlers will log more river time with instructors. We recommend the week-long course for paddlers serious about advancing quickly. This courses is a two-person minimum.

One of our most requested and beloved programs, Week of Rivers is more focused on exploring new rivers than learning new skills. The premise of the course is simple: run a new river everyday—five days, five rivers. And while NOC instructors will be there to help you improve your technique, they’re mostly there to facilitate the trip, providing the shuttles, handling the logistics, setting safety, recommending lines through rapids and snapping photos.

The Week of Rivers program is ideal for paddlers who feel comfortable and have a strong combat roll, but would still prefer to run new rivers with a guide. And as a bonus, paddlers have the option to demo boats from NOC’s instruction fleet—giving them a full-day to test drive the best boats on the market. Possible rivers include the Chattooga, Ocoee, Pigeon, French Broad, Nantahala, Nolichucky and others. This is for a Class III+ boater with a two-person minimum.

Surf & Turf

Duration: 5 Days
Price Starting At: $799.99

2018 Dates: Dependent on the Ocoee draw down release schedule. Most likely the last week of September or first week of October.
