The “bridge course” for paddlers advancing from beginner proficiency to intermediate skill levels. These paddlers are comfortable on introductory whitewater, have experience using paddling gear and equipment, understand paddling terms and concepts and have experience with flatwater rolling. The course aims to advance these paddlers into Class III boaters, able to carve up Nantahala Falls and enjoy more advanced rivers like the Pigeon and Ocoee.

In the weekend course paddlers will focus attention at Nantahala Falls and may paddle the Tuckasegee Gorge or the Pigeon. Perfecting a strong combat role will be a primary goal of the course, as this is an indispensable skill for Class III whitewater paddling. Skills will include:

  • Scouting
  • Eddy Turns/Peel Outs
  • Ferries
  • Stroke Timing
  • Combat Roll

This course is meant to be an “intensive class” with a focus on demonstrable skill improvements. Paddlers will start on the lake but will quickly progress into fast rapids. The two-day weekend course offers a convenient option for paddlers looking to improve. It will be most effective combined with follow-up private instruction or extensive practice.
