This 3-year certification course meets NFPA 1670 Swiftwater Technician standards and is recommended for emergency rescue personnel. Learn and practice the fundamentals of survival in moving water. This 3-day course teaches students to interpret moving currents and identify related hazards like hydraulics, strainers and sieves. Students also learn practical whitewater skills like raft guiding and handling, swiftwater swimming, rope rescues and mechanical advantage systems. Classes are based at NOC’s Nantahala River campus, giving students access to NOC’s rafts and equipment, and to the Nantahala— one of the best swiftwater rescue training locations in the world.

Skills you will acquire include:
• Hydrology and river classifications
• Site control and scene management
• Self-rescue techniques
• Swiftwater swimming
• Fundamentals of shore, boat and in-water rescues
• Boat handling
• Rope Rescues including mechanical advantage and anchor systems

In addition to the classroom setting, the SRT course also provides students with plenty of hands-on training through scenarios.
 
Scenarios include:
• Shallow river crossings
• Contact rescues including “live bait rescue” with rescue jackets
• Entrapment Drills
• Patient packaging, manual c-spine rolls and stablization

This intensive course focuses on victim rescues, flood disaster management, low-visibility rescues, highline systems and river search strategies. Veteran instructors guide you through realistic scenarios on the fast-moving Nantahala River. Completion of this course and a technical rope rescue course will satisfy NFPA 1670 Swiftwater Technician standards and qualify participants for swiftwater and flood search and rescue teams. The course takes place at NOC’s famous Nantahala campus in North Carolina and reviews essential swiftwater rescue gear and equipment.

Skills you will acquire include:
• Rope systems
• Management of litter & patient raising systems
• Highline systems
• Advanced river search concepts
• Performing rescues at night or in low visibility
• Basic flood disaster management
• Paddlecraft concepts

In addition to the classroom setting, the SRT course also provides students with plenty of hands-on training through scenarios.
