NOC’s wildly successful Youth Weeks are unlike any other summer camp. Kids spend an entire week on the rivers and lakes of Western North Carolina while making new friends along the way. In addition to the highest level of whitewater instruction, NOC’s instructors provide 24-hour supervision on and off the water. Youth Week is open to paddlers of any experience level.

Time on the lake focuses on learning new skills and refining the ones students already have through fun drills and games. Rivers paddled will depend on the skill level of the group, but the regular lineup usually includes some of these favorites: Nantahala, Tuckaseegee, Little Tennessee, Chattooga, Ocoee, Pigeon, French Broad, Nolichucky and Hiawassee.
On the final day of Youth Camp, families are invited for a Friday “Family Paddle” and lunch. Families paddle a short section of the Nantahala to see their young paddlers show off their new moves. Parents who don’t have their own kayak and gear can rent an inflatable kayak at a discounted rate and join the group on the water.

Price includes gear, transportation to lake and river locations, lodging and meals. Kids will have 24-hour supervision from our expert and responsible Paddling School Instructors.

NOC also offers a Day Camp option for the popular Youth Week. Young paddlers can still enjoy all of the activities of Youth Week, making new friends and gaining paddling skills, but they stay the night with their families somewhere in the area. This is a great option for vacationing families and locals. Young paddlers can still join the overnight group for meals too. The only difference between day camp and all inclusive camp is the lodging.

The course begins at the lake where your child will learn the basics of paddling, edging and boat control in a fun, game-styled, playful environment. During the next two days he/she will learn essential whitewater kayaking skills—catching eddies, peeling out and ferrying—on rivers that have mostly Class I rapids and moving water. This course is tailored to young learners by building on kayak skills at their pace. Course hours are 9AM to 4PM; includes lunch and a snack break mid-day.

Note: in most cases, the spray skirt will not be used in this program. As a result, the wet-exit and the kayak roll will not be taught during this course.
